Middle School Volleyball Handbook
Membership in the RVSA Junior A and Junior B Volleyball leagues is available to all RVSD middle schools.
Top
- Eligibility rules are those set forth in the RVSA By-Laws, Article II.
- A Junior A team roster, signed by the principal, is to be submitted to the sports coordinator by October 25.
- No middle school athlete is eligible to play Junior Varsity or Varsity Volleyball.
- Middle schools are not eligible for South Central Zone competitions.

- Participating schools are required to send one representative (athletic director) to the fall and spring middle school sports meetings.
- A Volleyball commissioner is approved by the governing body for a two-year term.
- Middle schools may enter a maximum of one boys and one girls Junior A team, and two boys and two girls Junior B teams.
- Junior A Volleyball League
- Participation includes the RVSA Divisional Championship tournament.
- The Junior A league schedule includes a seeding tournament, based on school population, followed by two league tournaments that result in rankings for RVSA play-offs.
- Statistics are based on two points for a win and zero for a loss.
- Junior A matches are the best of three with the first two games played to 25 and the third to 15.
- Games are scheduled in 45-minute timeslots. RVSA play-off games are scheduled 60 minutes apart, if possible.
- Junior A RVSA Divisional Championship tournaments (Tier 1 and Tier 2) are held on a Friday afternoon and evening.
- The locations of the Junior A RVSA Divisional Championship tournaments are determined each year and are held a larger gymnasiums.
- Junior B Volleyball League
- The Junior B League has been established to develop an interest in volleyball.
- The Junior B League tournaments are East/West tournaments.
- There are three Friday evening tournaments, at which each team has a minimum of three matches.
- Games are scheduled in 45-minute timeslots.
- No records are kept.

Rules and Regulations |
- All games are played according to the rules of Volleyball Canada. Exceptions to the rules are listed in Junior A Volleyball Rule Modifications and Junior B Volleyball Rule Modifications.
- League standings are determined on a point basis of two points for a match win and zero points for a loss.
- In the event of a tie, the following tie-breaking procedures are used to determine the higher standing:
- Win-loss record between the tied teams.
- Points for vs. points against between the tied teams.
- Win-loss record between the tied teams and the first-place team, or second-place team or third-place team, etc.
- Points for vs. points against between the tied teams and the first-place team, or second-place team or third-place team, etc.
- Overall points against.
- Total points against.
- Total points for.
- Coin toss.
- Side and serve are determined by a coin toss during the warm up.

Facilities and Equipment |
- The designated host team provides a game ball, score sheet, score cards, nets, antennae, standards and officials stands.
- The designated host team provides space for each team to change and shower.
- The facilities are booked by the sports coordinator. Schools must be prepared to host/co-host at a school other than their own.
- All middle school teams use a regulation volleyball.
- Teams must supply their own practice balls. The host school supplies the game ball.

Minor Officials |
- The designated host team organizes two trained score keepers and two line officials for each match. Each participating team provides one person to assist with these duties.
- Each team must be prepared to provide line officials if necessary.
- All teams are to train personnel for the jobs they perform.

Major Officials and Their Duties |
- The RVSA Volleyball league uses one carded volleyball official for both the Junior A and B league games and RVSA Divisional Championships.
- The officials operate according to the rules of Volleyball Canada unless otherwise instructed by the RVSA Volleyball commissioner as in the rule modifications. Such instructions result only from decisions made by the coaches at the Coaches’ Organizational meetings and ratified by the governing body at a Sports Parameters meeting.
- If an official fails to appear, and the coaches decide to play the match with a non-scheduled referee, that match stands as league competition.
- The sports coordinator is responsible for scheduling league and RVSA Divisional Championship officials.

Code of Conduct |
All athletes and parents must sign the RVSA Code of Conduct for Athletes and Spectators prior to participating in any exhibition or RVSA event. Coaches must also sign the RVSA Code of Conduct for Coaches. Failure to complete the form results in that participant being disqualified from play and may result in his/her team forfeiting points gained while participating with an ineligible participant.

Tournament Cancellation Procedures |
In the event that a tournament must be cancelled due to bad weather and/or poor road conditions, the sports coordinator informs schools and reschedules officials and facilities. The sports coordinator contacts each school via phone and email.

Grievances and Disciplinary Procedures |
- All grievances are dealt with according to the RVSA Appeal Policy - RVSA By-Laws Article XII.
- Athletes or coaches ejected from a match due to unsportsmanlike and/or flagrant conduct are automatically suspended for the next league or play-off match and receive a disciplinary letter from the commissioner, with copies sent to the coach, principal and sports coordinator.
- Any player or coach accumulating three or more penalty (red) cards is suspended for the next league or play-off match and receives a disciplinary letter from the commissioner with copies sent to the coach, principal and sports coordinator.

The RVSD sponsors awards for Divisional Championship tournaments. They include the following:
- First, second and third-place medallions for Boys and Girls, Junior A Tiers 1 and 2.
- RVSA Divisional Championship banners for Junior A Boys and Girls, Tiers 1 and 2.
- Fourth-place ribbons, Tiers 1 and 2.
- Participation ribbons for all Junior B teams.
